Hair loss is becoming a common reason for suspecting an underlying thyroid disorder issue. Thyroid hormones, with an emphasis on T3, increase hair follicle activity at the stem cell level. Thyroid hormones also increase the duration in which a hair follicle is found within its growth (i.e. anagen) phase. Altogether this means more hair.
There is more research showing a connection between low thyroid function and changes in hair pigmentation. This is of concern to the aging demographic as the grey and white hairs emerge, which are a clear sign of aging.
Thyroid hormones are not the only one to blame in a case of hair loss. Female and male hormones play a role as well. There will be more on this in the next blog post.
