A common question that comes up when I diagnose a patient with hypothyroidism is “How long does it take to feel treat this?”

Realize that this question is different from “How long does it take until I feel better?” because when given the right treatment for your body, I see many patients start to feel better before their hypothyroidism is in remission.

It can take 1-2 years to treat hypothyroidism. Some patients experience significant improvement within the first 3 months. Many patients report subtle improvement in the symptoms that are most concerning to them within the first 6 weeks, which provides a lot hope. In my clinical experience, these symptoms are typically fatigue and fatigue.

Another common symptom of hypothyroidism that makes the Top 3 list is weight loss. This is usually the most frustrating for patients because of aesthetic implications of carrying extra weight. Of the top 3 list of most concerning symptoms for patients with hypothyroidism, weight loss is often the last to improve. The thyroid needs to be functioning optimally for at least 3 months to efficiently “rev up” metabolism for weight loss to occur.

I share this with you because I empathize with the frustration. Treating hypothyroidism is marathon not a sprint. Celebrate every little victory. Take the little victories as a sign that you are moving in the right direction for your health.

Do your best to be patient during times when symptoms are worsening. Take these as signs that your body is calling for a little bit of extra attention and perhaps a little redirection. Communicate with me or your healthcare provider about your concerns so we can help you overcome these hurdles and help your stay on track. I am rooting for you!
